Beef Jerky Review of Savage Jerky

Andy Sun, Reporter
The Blade
Savage immediately comes across as a very professional and sophisticated jerky. A sample includes nine different flavors, including a dreaded ghost pepper flavor. Savage stands out from the crowd by using pork in some of their jerkies instead of traditional beef. Maple Buffalo Bacon and Sriracha Bacon are both extremely tender and delicious, which is no surprise considering they are both made of bacon. Savage also produces many more varieties of ordinary beef jerky, but there is nothing ordinary about the flavors. Mojo blends garlic, lime, and cilantro in a unique combo that is both classic and exotic. Sriracha Teriyaki has a slight hint of sriracha hot sauce but really succeeds in achieving a tender yet chewy texture. Improving on the already amazing flavor of sriracha, Sweet Sriracha Barbecue tames the fire of the hot sauce with a much needed touch of sweetness. Savage stays true to its name with its increasingly spicy varieties, starting with Mojo Jalapeno. Labeled as a relatively not spicy flavor, the spice sneaks up on you and hits hard. Mojo Habanero bumps up the heat even further, but sacrifices some of its flavor in order to achieve painful spiciness. The intense spiciness is achieved by soaking beef in a habanero marinade for twenty-four hours before going in the dehydrator, a process that makes this jerky truly special. Habanero Buffalo is even spicier, but the addition of buffalo seasoning also gives it great flavor reminiscent of chicken wings, extremely hot chicken wings that is. Last but not even close to least is Ghost Pepper, which burns like fire from Satan’s own furnace. I’m not even sure what it tastes like considering I could not feel my tongue.
