The Jerky Wrangler
Welcome To The Jerky Wrangler
Video reviews of all your favorite jerky. Rated on a scale of 1 to 10, ten being your home made, chemical free all natural jerky. No preservatives, MSG or any of those ingredients we can’t pronounce. A five being just your average jerky you find at your local food marts and convenience stores. Still good jerky, a 5 is not bad, just an average jerky. A 1 you would not want to feed to your dog, real bad jerky.
First jerky is a private label store brand, Sprouts Beef Jerky.

Welcome to the Jerky Wrangler!
Now, why do we need a Jerky Wrangler? Because we love Jerky, and there is some awesome Jerky out there.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, and if you like Jerky you probably have, there seems to be a real Jerky Renaissance going on right now. It’s kind of like what craft beers went through with IPA’s, and everybody was making them. Now, everybody is making Jerky too! And with all of these different small companies, it’s not just about the big three anymore: Oberto, Jack Links, and Tillamook. You can find them everywhere, and they’re good Jerky, but we have so much more variety now. You can really find some awesome Jerky. That’s why we need a Jerky Wrangler to round them all up for us, so we can see what’s out there, with the different types of Jerky and how they rate to one another.
THE JERKY WRANGLER!
I’m going to use a scale of 1 to 10, and that gives me a good versatility. 10 is going to represent your homemade Jerky. Now, does that mean a company can’t make a 10? No, some companies out there will equal what you can make at home. That’s what we’re looking for. We’re trying to find those 10’s. Also, we want to be able to identify what a 5 is, get a base point, and avoid those below 5. So that all the Jerky we buy will be 6, 7, 8, 9, and those 10’s. This is important because Jerky is not cheap, as I’m sure you know. You can spend $3.00 or more per ounce on Jerky. That gets pricey! But, what is Jerky? Jerky is steak that’s been dried. In fact, if you were to take 4 ounces of Jerky rehydrated, that would equal out to almost a 16-ounce steak. Pretty awesome! So, that is what the Jerky Wrangler is going to be all about for us.
Using that scale of 1 to 10 also enables us to set 5 as that middle point. Now 5 is not necessarily bad; an average Jerky is not bad. You can find a 5 and get it at a good discount price. That fits the bill, especially when you’re on the road or on the trail and you have a 5 that was a great deal at the store. But, we are going to shoot for that upper part of the scale and definitely avoiding the below 5’s. So, let’s go ahead and give an example of what a review is going to be like.
THE JERKY WRANGLER!
We have here Sprouts original beef Jerky. This is a store branded Jerky. Now, did Sprouts go out and make their own Jerky? No, they didn’t. They probably had one of the big three make it, possibly Oberto, Jack Links, Tillamook. It doesn’t say on the bag, so we don’t really know who made it, but someone else manufactured it for them and put the store brand on the bag. This is pretty typical, and you’ll see a lot of this with your big box stores and your convenient stores across the country. A larger manufacturer is making it for them and putting it under their brand name as private label Jerky. That’s what this is.
Now, we’re going to take a look at a piece out of the bag, and you’ll notice that this Jerky is fairly bendable. It has some tenderness to it, and yet it’s not leaving any residue on my hands, so it’s not an overly wet Jerky. It’s fairly dry, but it still has tenderness to it, and the pieces are all pretty uniform. Let’s go ahead and taste it and then describe that for you. It was very easy to bite, so it’s a tender Jerky. You can taste the hickory smoke flavor that they added to it, maybe a little hint of soy. The flavors are not overpowering, so you still get that beef flavor coming through. But again, what we’re looking at when we get into Jerky is how close it gets to the 10, being homemade Jerky. Now this is really going to be an average Jerky here; this is going to be a 5. You’ll find that a lot of private label Jerkys are just like this. The reason why, is they are all probably made by the same big manufacturer. So, this is a good Jerky, there’s nothing wrong with it, but it’s not the pieces or the style we would find in a 10. But again, it’s not bad, and if you get it at a good price, it’s going to fit the bill for you on the trail or on the road. So, this describes what a 5 is like.
THE JERKY WRANGLER!
Also, what we liked about this Jerky too was the fact that it had no Mono Sodium Glutamate or no Sodium Nitrate. Now, I personally don’t like those two ingredients. Sodium Nitrate is just kind of a preservative and Mono Sodium Glutamate is a flavor enhancer. Really, when you’re dealing with a quality piece of meat, why would you need a flavor enhancer? And again, when I made my own Jerky, I never used Mono Sodium Glutamate or Sodium Nitrate, and the Jerky was awesome. And I’m sure, if you’ve ever made it, you didn’t use those things either. So, that is a nice thing about this Jerky, because it doesn’t have those. But again, just based on the texture, based on the style, and based on the overall flavor, I’m going to give this a 5 because this is kind of you’re average and what you’ll find a lot out there. Private labels or some of the big brand labels will all have the same kind of texture and same kind of taste. It is fairly tender though, so it wasn’t too bad. And that’s what a 5 is all about.
