Welcome to the Jerky Wrangler! We’re up here in the mountains today, overlooking the desert, and it’s a beautiful day. And guess what made it even better? We brought our Jerky with us. Today we’re going to review Jack Links Jerky…
There is a new style of bag. You’ll notice here an old style bag, sriracha flavored, and the old style bag is what we’re focusing on today. This old style bag was a little different formulation. The new style bag here is the teriyaki and peppered. What’s different about them is, in the new style bag, Jack Links made a decision to do away with their Nitrates, so there is no Sodium Nitrate and no Mono Sodium Glutamate, and the things we don’t like in our Jerky. Also, remember, we’re using a scale of 1 to 10 to grade our Jerky. 10 is your homemade Jerky, and when you make homemade Jerky you don’t add that stuff, so you know how I feel about that.
So, we are going to use that scale as always, and let’s go ahead now and review the peppered Jerky. Let’s give this Jerky a shot and see what we think about it today. Now you’ll notice this Jerky is not super dry because there is some flex to it, it has some tenderness in it, and also there are those large cracked peppers on the top of it. So, it tears pretty easily. This piece is a little thicker than some of the other pieces but it does tear easily. Let’s give this Jerky a shot. There’s a very good flavor, right off the bat. You can taste that pepper come through, and you’ve got that nice flavor going on. It’s tender, and it’s not too hard to chew. It’s very similar to the type of Jerky that it was before they switched the bag. But again, the improvement is in this Jerky the fact that they did away with the Sodium Nitrate and Mono Sodium Glutamate. So, good job to Jack Links on doing that.
I would give this, on a scale of 1 to 10, [the peppered] a 6. I used to think of it as a 5 before, when it had all those additives, but now without them I feel confident in giving Jack Links Peppered a 6. So, the next time you’re on the trail, on a road trip, or anywhere beautiful like this, bring along some Jerky, and this one would be a good choice to bring along. Take care!
