Welcome to the Jerky Wrangler! It’s a beautiful day up here on the mountains. We’ve got the Cleveland National Forest behind me. You can probably see, if you know what to look for, Trabuco Canyon, a place where some people go fishing. Also there is Silverado Canyon, where they had the old mining activities way back when. If you’re ever up in those areas, you certainly want to bring along your jerky. I thought we would try out the Lawless brand jerky. There are three flavors that I have of their brand. One is the Spicy Sriracha, then Aloha Teriyaki, and Mango Habanero. What we like from the onset of this brand is that they use 100% grass-fed beef. That’s a real plus, to find nice high-quality meat like that. Plus, they are not using any nitrates, or monosodium glutamate, and no preservatives. So that’s really a plus all the way around. But let’s go ahead and try these and see how they taste. First, we’re going to try the Spicy Sriracha. Lawless Brand Jerky!
Having tried the Spicy Sriracha, we can tell you, for all you sriracha purists out there, this is not the Huy Fong Sriracha. So it’s an alternate sriracha. It has a nice flavor, but if you’re looking for an authentic Huy Fong, that isn’t what you’re going to find here. But this had a nice flavor, and we’ll hold it at that. It wasn’t too hot at all. Now let’s go ahead and try the next one. Let’s try the Mango Habanero. You’ll also notice with these bags, that they open on the side. It’s different from other jerky bags. So once their open, it’s easy to reach down and find the pieces you want. So that’s a little different take on bag style. Lawless Brand Jerky!
After trying the Mango Habanero, as you chew it and really absorb the flavor in your mouth, you can taste the hint of mango, which is interesting. It also had that habanero flavor, but it was a fairly tame habanero. It was more like a hot jalapeno but without the jalapeno flavor. Just to compare, typically a habanero is much hotter than a jalapeno, and this one was really of the same heat scale of a jalapeno with that habanero flavor of a habanero pepper. So, that is the Mango Habanero. Now, I’m going to try the Aloha Teriyaki.
Now, after trying the Aloha Teriyaki, it didn’t have an overpowering soy or teriyaki flavor. Which I thought was nice, because sometimes it seems like a lot of different companies put a lot of soy on it, and it’s very sugared and very sweet. This one wasn’t. You could definitely taste the teriyaki flavor, but it wasn’t super overpowering over the beef flavor. Another nice little touch with the Aloha Teriyaki is that it had little bits of toasted sesame seed on it, and that was a nice touch. It added a little more complexity to it, and it tasted good.
So, looking back here on the Lawless Jerky, how do they shake up on the scale of 1 to 10 rating? Well, the Spicy Sriracha is going to come in at a 6. The Mango Habanero is going to come in at just about a 7. And the Aloha Teriyaki, I think, is a solid 7 and maybe closer to an 8, really. So these are the flavors. I just wanted to mention that having high quality meat, with that grass-fed beef, it would be nice if they made a real simple flavor. Say, just one with cracked pepper and that’s it – just very simple so you can really let that grass-fed flavor come through. With these three flavors, I thought the flavors did kind of hide the base quality of the grass-fed beef. All in all, it’s a good jerky.
